About Access Livelihoods, a social enterprise in livelihoods

In working to transform the livelihoods of the marginalized, ALC India recognizes the need to work with committed professionals, expert associates, enthusiastic interns and volunteers. At any point in time, there are many challenging assignments at ALC India. We are constantly on the lookout for consultants who wish to apply their skills in transforming the livelihoods of economically marginalized communities.

Associates are resource persons who support ALC India’s projects as and when required. They are engaged by ALC India on Short Term Contracts for specific projects and programs. ALC India Associates are classified into two types – Full time Associates and Part time Associates - depending on the duration of the contract. These associates, with their specific expertise and rich experience, help the project execution and influence the outcomes.

The associate, by engaging with ALC India, discovers a range of opportunities to work in their area of expertise and contribute to the lives of marginalized. Associates offer their capabilities in areas including Veterinary Services, Community-based Institutions, Training in Livelihoods, Community Mobilization, Good Accounting Practices, Marketing and Procurement of Commodities.

Students from universities and management institutions from India and abroad are offered internship opportunities that range from 2 months to 1 year. Premier national and international institutions are given opportunities to work in the areas of livelihoods. Students from institutions like Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University, Germany, Indian Institute of Management, Indore, IRMA (Anand), Benares Hindu University, Varanasi, Symbiosis Institute of International Business, Pune, National Institute of Technology, Rourkela, KIIT, Bhubaneswar, Indian Institute of Plantation Management, Bangalore etc. have connected with ALC India. The internship projects ensure a balance of practical and theoretical learning experience.

Some of the internship projects include “Promotion of Marketing Federation for Weaver Cooperatives in East Godavari District, Andhra Pradesh”, “Market Research and Preparation of Business Plan for Milk Based Traditional Indian Dairy Products”, “Pre-feasibility study of establishment of seed processing unit in Farmer Producer Company”, “Developing a leadership module for social enterprises” etc.

In general, volunteers of ALC India are invited to contribute to specific tasks. Their term of engagement is comparatively lesser than that of interns. However, this also ensures a ground-level learning experience to enhance their experience, broaden their horizons and contribute to a cause. Our annual events like “Financing the Economically Marginalized” and “TATHYA” give ample opportunities to volunteers to work for a social cause. This opportunity is often a high point and a catalyst of change in one’s life.

ALC India offers fellowships to support individuals who desire to work on livelihoods issues and make a difference to the marginalized. The fellowship support includes: a monthly stipend, mentoring and handholding, opportunities to attend relevant trainings and prepare training material.

Till now, ALC India has supported three individuals with fellowships. They worked on:

1. Land and water related issues in tribal areas
2. Millets-based enterprise

Interested social entrepreneurs are requested to send a mail to hr@alcindia.org expressing interest in the fellowship. After reviewing the aspirant's proposed venture and credentials, ALC India's Board of Directors will select the individuals to be supported with a fellowship.

Women Entrepreneurship Programme
In a unique and first of its kind attempt to empower and train semi-literate women to take up entrepreneurial ventures, Access Livelihoods Academy (ALA) launched the women entrepreneurship programme, a mini-MBA for rural women. We partnered with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)– IKEA - DISHA for delivering the pilot phase. In the pilot phase of the programme, 100 participants from 4 clusters, with about 3 farmer producer organizations, across Telangana and Maharashtra were selected, to be imparted managerial and leadership skills. The vision of the program is to scale up to 10,000 rural women in 3 phases in the next 5 years. Women imparted with these entrepreneurial skills are expected to become role models at two levels – start-up enterprises helping their household income multiple three times and also, take up leadership responsibilities in Farmer Producer Companies (FPCs - FPOs’) in a cluster of villages. This programme is built on the experiential learning framework, with75% of time spent on structured practicum exercises covering foundational managerial concepts and 25% of the time allocated for facilitated classroom learning to reinforce the theoretical frameworks related to the concepts. The curriculum was structured around four pillars –Self-Transformation, Enterprise Skills, Enterprise Mindsets & Enterprise Excellence.

Lead – Curriculum Design & Implementation

Transforming India Initiative The Challenge

• 57 people possess as much wealth as the poorest 70 percent of the country and the richest 10 percent in India owns 80 percent of its wealth.
• The number of women participating in the labor force in India stands at a mere 27% and continues to drop further every year.
• 76% of children in the country do not have access to higher education.
• India is ranked 141 out of 180 countries on the Environmental Performance Index.
The Hope
If the reality of the country lies in these facts, the hope lies in the youth of the country. With the current education system failing to give any exposure to these pressing challenges or providing the students with the necessary competencies to solve them, most youths settle for jobs that provide a secure income and nothing more. With the right education, training, and support, we believe that the youth can become entrepreneurs with the power to provide meaningful, sustainable and systemic solutions to these pressing challenges.
Would you like to take up this challenge? Be a part of the core team that is building a platform through which youth are equipped to discover, dream, design and develop their own enterprises?
The Specifics
ALC India is launching ‘Transforming India Initiative’ to provide a platform through which entrepreneurs and enterprises are equipped to discover, dream, design, and development.

In partnership with the Institute of Rural Management, Anand (IRMA), the initiative will:
1. Accelerate existing enterprises with potential to scale up and sustain
2. Create entrepreneurs who have the necessary skills, mindsets and conscious leadership to address social, economic and environmental challenges
3. Establish enterprises that will impact the lives of a significant number of people and serve as model enterprises
The key to the programme will be the fellows who will transform into entrepreneurs, enable the acceleration of existing enterprises, and startup responsible enterprises. These fellows will have to be equipped with the necessary skills and mindsets to achieve these significant goals. They will then work towards creating an ecosystem where enterprises and entrepreneurs are nurtured.
