Feasibility Study

Project Brief

Feasibility study for developing collective marketing enterprises in agriculture and non-timber forest produce (NTFP); estimating the total potential of NTFP and agricultural commodities in the operational areas; and understanding the value chain and market channels of commodities.

Project Description

The study focused on the local markets as most of the trade takes place there. The findings are based on the understanding of the markets in the local area. The study was carried out considering 2 parameters - income and employment. Turmeric, Rajma, Pippal and Tamarind were the highest revenue generators. The study also found that most people depended on these products for employment. It was also seen that the marketable surplus was very significant, showing that marketing could pay off. The value chain analysis of the commodities indicated two distinct phases. While major trade (from a perspective of value to the producer) happened at the local level, the chain from the big trader to the terminal market represented the second distinct phase. From the big traders, the stocks were sent to distant markets:
  • Turmeric – Good (Gurra) quality went to Tamilnadu traders and lower quality went to traders and shops at Vishakhapatnam, Ankapalli, Kakinada, Rajmundry
  • Pippalmudi – Went to traders in Mumbai, Ahmadabad, Delhi, Kanpur
  • Rajma – Went to traders at Delhi, Kolkata farmers sold mostly to traders at the village level or at nearby mandi.
As the value addition and transactions at the local level itself (till level of nearby main market places) were considerable, the report recommended that an intervention was needed.
