Impact Assessment of SRI |
Bihar Rural Livelihoods Promotion Society was implementing a project on scaling up the system of Rice Intensification in Gaya, Nalanda, Purnia and Khagaria districts of Bihar. The project aimed at improving the livelihoods of the rural poor by contributing to their agricultural production by implementing the principles and practices of System Rice Intensification. Paddy is the main staple crop and also has the largest crop coverage in the state. However, the productivity of the crop is one of the lowest in the country.
The study has been carried out to assess the impact of SRI Intervention on the overall production of Paddy and also its impact on the livelihood of the target community. The study has been undertaken in Purnia, Gaya, and Nalanda districts of the State. It was observed that most of the SRI farmers were members of SHGs and were marginal farmers. They had taken land on lease and involved in agriculture for last 2-3 years. Seasonal migration of male was high in Purnia thus most of the agricultural activity was carried out by women. In traditional method if there produce lasts for 5 months now there produce lasts for 8- 9 month (70-80% increase). So because of surplus production in SRI method farmers are able to overcome their scarce month.
