Project Brief
The project was strategized to help and build the capacities of the youth and to help them get better job opportunities in the market. ALC India helped in conducting a status study on skill assessment and mapping of the youth in the slum areas as well as a market assessment.
Project Description
The objectives of the study were threefold:
- To assess current skills of 100 youth and their interest in employability programs in 10 slums of Andheri East, Mumbai
- To identify potential industries for local employment opportunities
- To explore relevant resource institutions for imparting technical and life skills, infrastructure and other related facilities in the areas near to the slums.
Youth aged 18-26 years from the slum areas of Andheri East, Mumbai were covered. Primary as well as secondary research was carried out. The sample size for personal interview was 86 for unemployed youth, 37 for employed youth and 22 for parents. In case of unemployed youth, the study revealed that while there was a huge population of underprivileged youth to be trained, 50% of the youth interviewed wanted to pursue further studies. 88% of the youth showed interest in receiving training but a significant 47% were interested in part time courses which would enable them to carry on with their education along with the training. The youth were interested to undergo the training program to get jobs in the organized sector. The study suggested that there was an opportunity to organise a Job mela for the students as almost 99% of them were ready to participate. The youth would primarily be interested in a job with an average salary range of around Rs. 4000- 6000 and in working 8 hours a day. The youth were interested to undergo the training program to get jobs in the organized sector. The primary reason – offered by 62% of the youth – for undergoing the training was the dissatisfaction with their current job and low salary.
