With an end goal of improving socio-economic standards of the target community, the study aimed at assessing the current resource availability and scope for enhanced usage of same, so as to realize added value for the community in a sustained manner. The study involved understanding the returns from existing activities and a comprehensive assessment of factor and demand conditions for these activities.
The target population of the study were inhabitants of villages around Keezhakarai area falling in Thirupullani block of Ramanathapuram district of Tamil Nadu. The study was conducted in 2 phases. Phase I was an overall need assessment of products and services. Phase II focused on a perspective plan for selected products and services. The study of sources of income and number of participants was done through an individual household study. A village study identified 12 options in 3 areas: product, services and infrastructure support. 7 product-related interventions were identified: fishing nets, sea weed, palmyra products, coconut coir, fibre and pith, sea food, domestic consumption items and goat rearing. Two service interventions were identified: micro finance & other financial services and employment generation to youth. Three infrastructure interventions were identified: land development, housing and drinking water.
